DECs or Display Energy Certificates What are they?
·         DECs are for buildings with a floor area of 1,000M2 or above.
·         Display Energy Certificates (DECs) are for Public buildings occupied by Public Authorities or Institutions providing a service to the public and are visited by the public.
·         A DEC Certificate needs to be on display at all times.  
 
What type of building typicaly requires a DEC?

  • Any Public or Publicly funded service i.e Doctors, Dentist of over 1,000M2

 What information is in a Display Energy Certificate or DEC?
 
  • Display Energy Certificate (DEC) shows the Operational Energy Rating of the building based on the actual energy consumption as is recorded by gas, electricity and other meters
  • This helps the public see the energy efficiency of a building.
  • A DEC is accompanied by an advisory report that indicates measures to improve the energy rating of the building.
  • The DEC is valid for a period of 12 months beginning with the nominated date.
  • The advisory report (AR) is valid for seven years from issue.
  • The DEC needs to be renewed every 2 Years.

 Who is responsible for getting an EPC, DEC

  • The Building Occupier must display a valid energy certificate (DEC)
  • They must also have a valid advisory report (AR) in their possession.
  • The DEC should be prominently displayed at all times
  • The DEC must be clearly visible to the public.
  • The DEC needs to be at least A3 in size 
  • It is recommended to be displayed in the reception area of a building.
  • The penalty for failure to display is £500.
  • For not being in possession of a valid Advisory report £1,000.
  • A DEC is reguired for buildings over 1,000M2 as from 1st October 2008.
